On June 18,local time, in order to actively contribute to innovative drug discovery and development, increase the level of collaboration within the international research community, and make the best use of resources for global public health, the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University and the Scripps Research Institute signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in San Francisco to set up a joint institute to carry out translational research and drug development. WANG Weizhong, member of the standing committee of Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee and secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal CPC Committee, witnessed the signing of the agreement between WU Yundong, Chancellor of the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University, and Peter Schultz, President and CEO of the Scripps Research Institute.
According to the agreement, the two sides will work together to create a world-class biomedical research enterprise that creates innovative drugs for the treatment of cancer, metabolic and inflammatory diseases, degenerative diseases of aging and infectious disease. To this end, the two sides agreed to set up a non-profit research institute to conduct basic and early translational biomedical research, and train scientists in biomedical research.
This collaboration will combine the research capabilities of the Scripps Research Institute in the field of translational medicine with the first-class research programs in pharmaceutical chemistry and synthetic chemistry in the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University. The vision is to create a self-sustaining pipeline of innovative drugs for the worldwide community.
On the same day, Secretary WANG Weizhong met with Peter Schultz, WU Yundong, vice Chancellors YANG Zhen and TU Huan of the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University and Weijun Shen, Principal Investigator and Director of China Partnership of Calibr (a drug discovery affiliate of TSRI), and jointly attended the opening ceremony of the Shenzhen Bay Silicon Valley Scientific Research and Innovation Center in Santa Clara, California.
Background:
Founded in 1924, The Scripps Research Institute is one of the largest private non-profit research institutions in the United States. The institute represents a world-leading biomedical research institution with infrastructure and expertise to accelerate the translation of basic biomedical research into new medicines. Scripps has produced new drugs that have impacted cancer, autoimmune diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. In 2017, Nature magazine ranked The Scripps Research Institute as the leading scientific and technology innovator in the world. The President Peter Schultz is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine, and a Wolf and Solvay Prize winner; he is recognized as a leader in chemical biology and drug R & D.
The Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University has made outstanding achievements in medicinal chemistry and chemical synthesis and has accumulated important experience in the research and development of new drugs, and recently has been approved as the state key laboratory of cancer genomics. WU Yundong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is a universally recognized theoretical computational chemist.
Because this collaboration will contribute to the establishment of a world- class research capability in translational medicine in Shenzhen and will positively impact the biotechnology industry and human health in China and around the world, Shenzhen will support the collaboration between Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University and the Scripps Research Institute. This support will include funding for follow-up research and development based on a range of pre-clinical candidate drugs initially developed by the Scripps Research Institute as well as funding for the establishment of the institute.
