Andre(PHBS): Today is a very special day for us. In fact, it is the first time where 8 different schools participate together in the opening ceremony. Now, whilst we all have different backgrounds, we do share four common reasons for studying at PekingUniversity: internationalism, tolerance, innovation and dream. In the following, we will present these four keywords in groups of two.
International
Lydia(STL): Our group’s keyword is: Internationalism.
Lydia(STL): Actually, my motivation to study at PKU is quite similar to yours. I am particularly impressed by the strong and diverse international backgrounds of STL’s teaching staff, who do not only devote their time to teaching us, but also provide professional guidance throughout the entire master program. Most importantly, I am convinced that this learning experience will allow me to fulfill my dream of matching the need for legal assistance in China. Looking into the future, what are your plans upon graduation?
Lydia(STL):I am sure that PKU’s increasingly international orientation will help us realize our dreams.
Tolerance
KANG Risheng(ECE): Our group’s keyword is tolerance.
XU Jipeng(SHSS): As we all know, tolerance has long been one of the most significant traditions of PKU. A few years ago, one of my teachers told me that the most important task I would need to do during college life is not to master a certain kind of professional skill, but to develop my own way of thinking. It was not until my graduation that I came to recognize what that actually means. As a student majoring in sociology, I need to approach and face various marginal groups and subcultures such as homosexuals, sex workers, drug addicts, lunatics and migrant workers. They’re always labeled by society as abnormal or immoral simply because they choose a different way of life. However, only when we keep away personal prejudice and try to be open-minded, can we be able to walk into their world and fully understand them. As you know, prejudice always obscures truth.
KANG Risheng: You know tolerance is a really complex concept. Since our former president Cai Yuanpei proposed the word last century, PKU has continuously become more and more diverse. In my opinion, tolerance stands for inclusiveness. PKU is famous for its glorious academic achievement and is the successor of Chinese traditional culture. What’s more, as a famous international university, eastern and western cultures come together to exchange and understand their different ideas. All these factors will broaden our horizon. You know, the width of the world depends on the length of your vision. So ,Bearing the importance of tolerance in mind, I believe every PKUer will have a bright future. Thank you!
Innovation
Our key word is “innovation”
HU Boyang(SAM):As we all know, Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University represents a new era of reform and innovation at PKU. For example, the School of Advanced Materials is the youngest member of the PKU Shenzhen family, founded less than two years ago. I came here because the school combines advanced material science and applied engineering research. Moreover, there are many ambitious teachers with strong international backgrounds and the drive to innovate. I want to be part of this exciting group, contributing to our national innovation.
XUN Sangni(SCBB): In my view, scientific and technological innovations require the combination of knowledge from different fields. SCBB academic structure offers interdisciplinary studies in the fields of chemistry, biology and computation. This is why I am particularly fond of PKU in Shenzhen. As the first special economic zone in China, Shenzhen has been the pioneer of innovation for more than 30 years. Now, we, the PKUers who are younger than Shenzhen, are gathering here to pursue our dream of innovation.
ZHU Yongsheng(SEE): Thinking of the increasingly polluted water and air, China has paid a high price for its rapid economic development. As a new graduate, my dream is strongly connected with my future research. I am eager to identify and solve scientific problems within our environment, helping us to realize a low or zero-carbon economy in China.
Dream
CHEN Sijie(SUPD): Our group topic is dream. I believe everyone here has a dream about his or her future. We would like to share our dream.
CHEN Sijie: In the history of urban planning, scholars have conceived theories of ideal city, like Howard’s Garden City. They try to solve problems of population, transportation and environment. 100 years ago, the urban planner Mawson articulated his dream for Calcary, a small town at that time. Now Calcary is the 5th largest city of Canada, and still gets sustainable development. Similarly, my dream is to contribute to China’s successful urbanization, by applying the knowledge gained from PKU.
ZHU Yongsheng: However, we should not only have our individual dreams, but also pursue a common dream – the PKU dream. In fact, looking at today’s audience, I see many future industry leaders, sharing this dream. The dream of making PKU an internationally acclaimed first-class university. A dream which requires aggressive, brave and clever students.
CHEN Sijie:A dream which requires all of YOU.
All: I love PKU.
Andre(汇丰商学院):今天对我们而言是非常特殊的一天。
Andre(汇丰商学院):我来这里有很多理由呀。
Start here, make a difference.
