Dear guests, colleagues, and students,
尊敬的各位来宾，各位同事以及亲爱的同学们：
Today, I am greatly honored and extremely excited to be here representing all faculties and staff members of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and share our sincere joy welcoming new members of our school.
今天，我非常荣幸也非常激动地，在此代表北京大学深圳研究生院的全体教员，全体职工，对我们的新成员表示真诚的欢迎。
This is a memorable day for us to greet you, our new incoming family members of Peking University. Becoming a part of one of the best universities in the world must be exciting for you as well. No matter where you are from or what kind of history brought you here, I am sure it was all followed by great accomplishment. So I would like to congratulate you for making it happen. Now you are at the new starting line for another chapter of your journey. It should be full of adventure, surprise, and possibly occasional setbacks.
今天是值得纪念的一天，因为我们能够与北大深研院这个大家庭的新成员见面。相信在座的各位新同学对能够成为这所世界一流大学的一份子，也是感到激动万分的。无论你们来自何方，有着怎样的经历，相信你们都必定曾有着辉煌的成就。所以，我要为你们所取得的成就祝贺你们。但是现在，你们又站在人生的新篇章的起点上。这段新的篇章一定是充满了冒险与惊喜，但是有时也可能会有挫折。
Just a couple of months ago, I met many happy faces full of joy and pride with bright futures ahead. It was at the commencement of our school. The graduates I met there were just like you a few years ago. A lot of things should have happened to them during the time they spent here. And what happened in those years should be the reason of their beaming faces.
就在几个月前，我曾在毕业典礼上看到许许多多有着光明未来的，充满着喜悦和骄傲的面孔。他们，在几年之前正如在座的你们。在这几年中，他们经历了很多。这几年的经历，正是他们能够在毕业典礼上喜气洋洋的原因。
I’d like to see the same confident faces a few years later when you take the stand at the podium. For that, I’d like to make a few friendly advices you might find useful while you are here and hopefully even after you leave this place for the next chapter of your life.
我希望几年后也能够在你们的毕业典礼上，看到你们充满了自信的笑脸。为此，我要为在座的各位新同学提一些友好的建议。希望这些建议能对你们在此的学习生活，甚至是离开这里以后都能有些助益。
First of all, Stay Focused. The fact that you are here sitting under the banner of Peking University tells us just who you are and what you are capable of. We expect nothing less than the brilliancy and hard working attitude we’ve seen in many years. But greater success always comes with greater effort. As long as you can keep it real and give your best performance, you’ll always shine in the classroom, in the lab, and everywhere else.  Remember. Everyday, you are getting better or you are getting worse. You never stay the same.
首先，最重要的一点就是要保持专注。能够成为一名北大人的事实已经告诉了我们，你们是谁以及你们能够做到些什么。我期待你们能够一如既往地努力和出色。但是，天道酬勤，更大的成功需要更多的努力。如果你能一直展示你最好的一面，那么无论在课堂上，在实验室，还是在其他的地方，你都能闪耀光辉。要记住，每一天，你都在变化。不是变的更好，就会变的更差，但从不会原地踏步。
The second advice I’d like to give is to Plan Ahead. Most of you are still young and have many more years ahead of you than years behind. A common mistake younger generation make is that they tend to be myopic. It’s easier to have concrete plan on what you can do next semester, next year or after your graduation. But sometimes it is difficult to look what comes in 5, 10, or 20 years from now. But life is a long race, and you want to make the best choice for your whole life. This is a relevant issue, in fact, because what’s best today doesn’t necessarily mean it’s best for you many years later.  Make a long term goal and stick to the plan. You’ll thank yourself later.
我要提到的第二点建议就是，要有计划性的做事。你们大多数都还很年轻，未来的日子还很长。现在年轻一代人所犯的一点共同的错误就是，对于未来的规划太短视。如果能够计划好下学期，下一年或者当你毕业之后要做的事情，那当然比较容易。但是现在要知道看5年以后，10年以后，甚至是20年以后要做什么，对于你们来说就比较难了。在生命的长跑中，你们都想要做对自己最好的选择。事实上，现在对你来说最好的东西，在许多年后，未必还有如此重要的意义了。因此，制定一个长远的目标，坚持下去，在未来你会感激你自己，当初曾经有这样的决定。
In the mean time, I also want you to enjoy every single moment you spend here and have fun. There’s no doubt a couple of years you’re spending here is crucial for your whole life. That doesn’t mean though you cannot enjoy your time here. Graduate school can be a depressing place. The amount of work and competition could be stressful. Things go wrong sometimes and you might get frustrated. When that happens, take a deep breath and look around. Shenzhen is a great city. Explore and find something interesting. Keep in mind that there are people around you. Earlier, I used the word family and that’s a good description of what we are trying to build here. We want to provide a relaxing atmosphere for you to learn useful knowledge, communicate with others, and create new ideas. Believe me. You will do all these things much better if you know how to properly balance everything between keeping it tight and staying loose.
与此同时，我也希望你们能够享受在这里的每一天。毫无疑问，即将在深研院度过的这几年，对你们的人生将是至关重要的。但是这并不意味着你不能够在这里享受人生的乐趣。研究生院可以是一个令人崩溃的地方。这里的工作量巨大，竞争激烈，也许一时的挫折会让你感觉很无助。在这种时候，深呼吸再观察一下你的周围。深圳是一座伟大的城市，去探索它，发现你所感兴趣的事物。要记住，在深研院，你并不是单单一个人的。刚才我用大家庭来形容深研院，这正是我们努力想要营造的氛围。我们想要提供一个轻松愉悦的氛围给大家，让你们在此可以快乐的学习，交流，创造。相信我，如果你们能够在过于紧张和过于放松之间找到平衡点，一定能够把一切都做的更好。
The last and probably the most important message I want to deliver is to Do the Right Thing. The name of Peking University means a lot. It comes with huge expectation. People see you as a future leader and there is great responsibility attached to it. You might think, why can’t I cut corners? Every one does. Why should I take the high road when nobody would? Well, that’s what leaders are supposed to. I don’t think it’s necessary to list what’s right and what’s not, because you should already know the answers in your heart.
最后，也是我想要传达的最后一点信息，就是要做正确的事情。北京大学的名字蕴含着深刻，沉重的含义。对你们而言，则意味着更高的期待。人们在认为你是未来的领导人的同时，将会对你寄予更高的期望。你也许会想，为什么我不能走捷径？别人都在走，为什么我要选择没有人愿意走的艰难道路？这是因为，天将降大任于斯人也，必先苦其心志。我想我不需要一一列出什么是正确的，什么是错误的。在你们的心中，早有答案。
And finally, I’d like to use this time to thank my colleagues, all faculties and staffs of Peking University.  We do have the teacher’s day coming up in a few days, and perhaps this is the right time to appreciate all of our tireless effort and dedication to our students and the school.
最后，借此机会，我要感谢我的同事们以及在北大深研院工作的全体教职工。教师节即将到来，我想在这个时机，感谢你们不辞辛苦的工作以及对学校和学生们的无私奉献！
