Dear students, respected faculty and staff members, ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning. Thank you very much for attending the Opening Ceremony of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School for our new academic year. It is my great honor and pleasure to see you all gathered here today at PKU Shenzhen.
2014 is already proving to be a promising year. Today we have here with us 1004 new postgraduates. Congratulations! Welcome you all! In addition, we warmly welcome 59 new faculty and staff members to join our family here at PKU Shenzhen. Please allow me to represent Peking University and Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School to welcome you all, and I wish you great success in your studies and careers here with us.
In our new students, there are 71 international students from 31 countries. Welcome to PKU Shenzhen! I sincerely wish that you will successfully complete your studies in the next two to three years and become the ambassadors between China and your home countries.
It is a great honor to stand here today and it is my great honor to work both for you and with you. The majority of our new students this year are children of the 90’s. You grew up in a quickly developing world and all made the same decision to continue your studies at PKU Shenzhen. Peking University is the cradle of future elites and leaders, and Shenzhen is a leading global city in China. PKU Shenzhen will provide you with a diverse, free and open platform where you will spend the most unforgettable time in your life.
Different from your undergraduate life, you will have more free time and have to be more independent in your postgraduate studies. Therefore, at the early stage of your entrance, you should have a clear idea about how to spend the next few years and in what way you will allow PKU Shenzhen to be a springboard into your futures. From now on, we will work and live together at PKU Shenzhen. As your chancellor, I want to share a few thoughts with you on how to be better your life and become a true PKUstudent.
Firstly, I wish for you to inherit and protect the value of Peking University. For more than 110 years, the destiny of Peking University has intertwined with the development of China. Therefore, as a student of Peking University, we should not only consider our personal development, but also how to positively influence China and the world for the better. As you proceed with your studies here at Peking University, you will more clearly come to see the expectations, disappointment and criticism thrust upon your generation by society. I hope that you have the courage to face all these issues, and shoulder the social responsibilities of our time.
Secondly, I hope you will further explore the spirit of innovation. Innovation is aspirit shared both by Peking University and the city of Shenzhen. Lu Xun used to say, “Peking University is always fresh; it is the pioneer of social movements”. Shenzhen has the most active private enterprises in China. Here you will find new technologies, new systems and new ideas. As a student of PKU Shenzhen, you are in the midst innovation itself. You must be creative and have the courage to be different in order to thrive. Experience teaches us that in order to create, you must respect diversity and not be afraid of failure. PKU Shenzhen is the epitome of diversity. We have diverse research fields and the top researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds. We have a creative and open platform for you to communicate. We want to explore with you, to walk with you side by side on the paths that have been traveled by no one. We give you the strength to stand on your own, the opportunity to work with the most brilliant minds, and the spirit to walk into the unknown.
Thirdly， here at PKU Shenzhen, you will learn and develop the ability to act: to carry out your ideas, to mobilize and coordinate actions in partnership with others. A dream remains a dream if you do nothing about it. A thought does not change anything, however fantastic it may sound. It is your actions that put life into a success.
Lastly, with all my best wishes, I hope you will enjoy your time here with us. To enjoy is an ability and you should enjoy while you still can. I hope you are happy here everyday.

非常感谢各位参加北京大学深圳研究生院新学期开学典礼！很荣幸我能与各位相聚今日、相聚北大深研院！
2014年是充满期待的一年，我们刚刚满怀喜悦地迎来了1004名新同学。祝贺你们！欢迎你们！同时，我们还迎来了59名新教师和新员工。在此，请允许我代表北京大学和北京大学深圳研究生院的全体师生、对你们表示热烈的欢迎并送上我衷心的祝愿。祝愿你们在未来的学习和工作中能够获得成功！
在我们1004名同学之中，还有来自五大洲31个国家的71名国际留学生，让我们以特别的掌声欢迎你们，并祝愿你们在未来的两到三年中顺利完成学业、并成为各国与中国之间的友好使者！
能够为你们工作、并在未来见证你们的成长是我极大的荣幸。2014级学生的主体都是90后的一代，你们成长于飞速发展的全球化时代，又不约而同地选择从北大深研院青春再出发。北大是培养领袖精英人才的摇篮，深圳又是中国改革开放的先驱城市，我相信，北大深圳研究生院将为大家提供一个多元、自由、开放的平台，你们在这里的时光将会多彩而难忘。
不同于本科阶段，研究生的学习时间更为有限，也主要靠自己把握自己。因此，在入学之初，你们就应该尽可能地明确未来几年要如何度过，切实让自己的人生因为有在北大的经历而变的不同，因为持续努力而得到提升。从今天起，我们将共同开启在南国燕园的精彩生活。作为师长，我希望在研究生阶段，你们能从以下几个方面完善自己的人生，成长为一个合格的北大人。
第一，锻造坚守北大人的价值观念。北大之所以经常被称为“中国的最高学府”，是因为承载了中国和世界人民的很多希望，也因此得到了其他大学难以得到的各种发展资源。北京大学建校一百一十多年来，北大自身的发展始终与国家民族的命运息息相关。所以，作为北大学子，我们不仅仅应考虑个人理想，更应该同时思考个人的事业如何在国家和社会层面产生更多积极的影响。同学们，你们进入北大之后会更多感悟到社会对北大人的期望、失望甚至责难，希望你们始终能正视社会的期待，担负起时代的重托，也希望你们能够将北大人特有的社会责任与使命感深深融入到血液之中，在求学过程中不断形成可以影响一生的北大人的价值观念。
第二，深刻领悟创新的精神内核。作为北大传统与深圳精神的共同脉搏，创新是我们最应追求的品质之一。鲁迅先生早就说过,“北大是常为新的，改进的运动的先锋”。深圳这个城市汇聚了中国最具活力的民营企业，各种新技术、新机制、新思想交相辉映。我想，作为在北大深圳求学的研究生，我们要置身于创新之中，追求创新，敢于创新，将创新的精神植入我们的精神血脉。乔布斯说，你的时间有限，不要把它浪费在重复别人的生活，不要让别人的观点淹没了你内心的声音。“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.…Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice”。众多经验告诉我们，创新的前提是尊重多元，敢于试错，勤于行动。北大深研院是多元的。我们汇聚了来自世界各地和全国的不同学科、不同背景的青年才俊；我们开创了创新的氛围与平台，在这里，我们不是去“教”你东西。正相反，我们想与你们一起去发现，一起去并肩行进在无人走过的道路上。在北大深研院，我们给你们独立站立的能力，我们给你与世界一流头脑共事的机会，我们给你走进未知世界的勇气。
第三，我希望你们逐渐养成一种执行力。执行力是指实践你的想法的行动力和与人协作的行动力。如果你不动手开始做事情，想法只是一个想法，梦想也只是一个梦。不论听起来有多炫，一个想法并不能改变什么。是行动为思想注入生命活力。行动，或者说由想到做这个跳跃，其实是非常难的。推动他人以一个团队的方式去为一个共同的目的工作更是一个挑战。我们这个时代正在进入一个充满巨变的时代，没有人确切地知道未来的二十年会发生什么。我们现在能做的就是准备好自己，站稳脚步。你必须快速地思考，快速地行动，然后再快速地反思。千万不要惧怕失败，也不要逃避责任。在梦里，一个人永远是赢家。只有在实践中，当你试行你的想法之时，失败和困惑才会产生。但只有从绝望之境走过一遭的人才能得到那样一种视野：这是一种无胆之人不会有的视界。有了这种视界，你才能用崭新的双眼看到你自己、你的事业和这个世界。
最后，伴随着我最美好的祝福，我希望你们享受在北大深研院的时光。
