Dr. Hong-Gang Ni join the Editorial Board of STOTEN

Recently, Dr. Hong-Gang Ni with PKUSZ joined the Editorial Board of Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN) at the invitation of the journal’s co-Editors-in-Chief, Prof. Damia Barceló Cullerés and Prof. James P. Bennett. This appointment is initially arranged for a three-year term. STOTEN is one of Elsevier’s well-known scientific journals, and also one of the mainstream journals in environmental science. The impact factor of STOTEN was 3.26 in 2012. As a member of the Editorial Board, Dr. Ni will participate in the review, best paper selection, and editing special issues for STOTEN, as well as providing strategic recommendations for the journal’s growth.

In recent years, Dr. Ni has conducted investigations into the environmental behavior and fate, human exposure and health risk of organic pollutants. He systematically investigated the sources and fate of organic pollutants in the coastal zone off the South China Sea, including the development of a sampling design to measure riverine fluxes from the Pearl River Delta, China to the South China Sea and confirmation of buffer effects of contamination within the coastal zone. These results will further our understanding of the geochemical cycling of persistent organic pollutants in the global environment.
In addition, he has employed molecular markers to examine the correlative relationships between environmental pollution and regional social and economic development; For example, a numerical model was established to correlate the implications of molecular markers with the level of regional economic development, which was published in Environmental Science and Technology. Furthermore, he has explored the environmental effects of emerging organic pollutants, eg, human exposure and health risk of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been investigated, which was the first of its kind. Dr. Ni has also examined the current pollution control strategies in China, and the findings were published as a cover story in Environmental Science and Technology, which was cited by an article and a news story in Science. The results are expected to be useful for correcting the public’s biased opinions about China’s pollution issues.
