This spring, University of San Diego School of Law entered the first semester of its new exchange program with Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL), located in Shenzhen, China. As part of the exchange program, three STL students — Yongzhe (Stephanie) Wang, Fang Fang Liu and Xu Tao — are currently enrolled at USD School of Law during the spring 2013 semester. All three students are candidates in the Juris Master and Juris Doctor programs at STL.
In a recent interview, STL exchange student Stephanie Wang discussed how she particularly enjoyed her antitrust class with USD School of Law Professor Mark Lee.
“Antitrust law is one of my personal interests,” Wang said. “In China, antitrust law is in its very beginning stages. We only established the first antitrust laws — we call them anti-monopoly laws in China — just four or five years ago, and they are constantly evolving.”
Upon her return to China, Wang will intern in the Shanghai office of the New York-based law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where she hopes to practice antitrust law.
In a further collaboration between the two schools, USD School of Law’s Director of Tax Programs and Professor-in-Residence John Forry is a visiting international faculty member at STL this spring. He is teaching courses from USD’s well-established tax law curriculum in the areas of U.S. income and corporate taxation and working closely with STL’s highly regarded faculty. In addition, STL students who are admitted to USD’s LLM in Comparative Law or LLM in Taxation program after graduation from STL may receive credits in that program for most courses taught at STL by USD’s law faculty.
“Students at STL are talented and energetic, with a focus on adapting the best features of U.S. JD education to a Chinese context—a powerful combination to help produce strong legal professionals for China as a globalizing society,” said Forry.
Founded in 2008, STL is the leading law school in China focusing on the comparative study of U.S. law and Chinese law. The STL semester exchange program is part of USD School of Law’s continually expanding international programs designed to benefit to both students and faculty. For nearly 40 years, USD School of Law has been a leader in international and comparative law. The law school offers a JD degree with an international law concentration, an LLM degree in international law for U.S. students and an LLM degree in comparative law for graduates of law schools outside the United States.
