Professor Snyder’s Book on Food Safety Law in China Earns Recognition at World Gourmand Awards

C.V. Starr Professor of Law Francis Snyder’s groundbreaking book, Food Safety Law in China: Making Transnational Law, earned recognition at the 2017 Gourmand International Cookbook Awards, May 27-28 in Yantai, Shandong Province, China.  The book was recognized as “Best in the World” in the “Best Wine and Food Law Book” and “Best Food Safety Institutions Book” categories.

The Gourmand International Cookbook Awards is one of the most prestigious awards competitions in the entire culinary world.  It was founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau.  Each year, the Gourmand Awards looks across the globe and honors the very best food and wine related books, including digital and print, as well as television programs.  This year, books from over 200 countries competed for top honors in the competition.

Food Safety Law in China: Making Transnational Law traces the development of China food safety law and policy from the 2008 melamine infant formula crisis to today.  Professor Snyder demonstrates that advances in China’s food safety standards during this period were influenced heavily by cross-border factors, as well as by institutions deeply embedded in Chinese society.  Substantial challenges remain for China’s approach to food safety law and policy, but Professor Snyder offers numerous proposals for possible solutions.  Ultimately, Professor Snyder predicts that China will embark on a regulatory path that both incorporates lessons learned from other countries and provides new strategies from which the rest of the world will learn.

On receiving the award, Professor Snyder thanked Peking University School of Transnational Law and Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School for their encouragement and support.  Given the culinary distinction of the award, he also joked, “I was so happy I almost ate my book!”

The Gourmand Awards recognition of Professor Snyder’s book is a testament to the universality of his work and its important contributions to society across multiple dimensions.
